On my way back from visiting the Suri tribe on my private Omo Valley Photography tour we spent some time in Maji.

Paul from Kbean coffee visited an Ethiopian Gesha Plantation in South West Ethiopia on one of my private Ethiopian tours. Salayish Integrated Farm is part of the same group as the Salayish Hotels in Mizan Teferi. Gesha coffee is a rare and in demand coffee that originated in Ethiopia.

Tribes in Ethiopia - ARBORE

The Arbore tribe only have four villages and they are all quite close and in Southern Ethiopias Omo Valley. Living near the border of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region and Oromia in the flood plains near Lake Chew Bahir this tribe is highly spiritual and full of culture and SMILES! The most Southern part of Ethiopias Great Rift Valley it is an absolute delight to drive to visit the Arbore tribe…although depending on the road you take it may be bit bumpy!

Dassanech Tribe - The most southern Ethiopian tribe!

Between Omorate and Lake Turkana large Dassanech clans with multiple villages of difference sizes are dotted with their domed huts. Unique traditions, hairstyles and ways of living, they are an incredible African tribe to spend time with!

Nyangatom tribe body scarring and beaded necklaces!

Donyiro was the original tribal name of the Nyangatom people. The Suri call them the Bume tribe. The Nyangatom are fierce in battle, but one of the most welcoming and friendly tribes to visit on an Omo Valley photography tour!

Surma Tribe of Ethiopia Lip Plates and Traditions

The feeling of the lower lips dangling and wobbling (from lip plates) against my cheeks as the Suri Tribe women kiss me around the campfire this evening was something I’ll never forget. The Mursi and Suri Tribe are one of the last African ethnic groups that still wear lip plates.

What is the Mingi Curse in the Omo Valley?

The Mingi Curse is still practised by some tribal villages in the Omo Valley of Ethiopia, but the Kara (or Karo) Tribe have stopped this ancient ritual of murdering babies and children who elders traditionally declared to be cursed.

There are many tribes in Ethiopia and the Kara tribe in the Omo Valley has a lot of tourists visit due to its scenic location next to the Omo River, which is one of the reasons why camping with them is so wonderful.

A memorable but heartbreaking experience with such welcoming and friendly families on a road side stop in Ethiopia. The Suri tribe were the main village we were visiting on this Omo Valley photography tour, but the long drive to get to their remote location means great opportunities for unplanned and authentic experiences on the road trip.
